What Types Of Braces Are There?

Team Orthodontics

Braces correct dental misalignments by moving teeth into healthy, desired positions. Along with improving a patient's appearance, braces could guard against various health issues, such as dental decay.

If a dental or oral health professional recommends braces, heed their advice and move forward with treatment. Doing so saves you a lot of time, money, and discomfort in the long run.

Be aware that there are also several different types of braces to consider. Options include the following:

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces consist of brackets that a dentist or orthodontist bonds to a patient’s individual teeth. They will then place a thin metal wire over the brackets, completing it with ligatures to ensure the wire and brackets remain in place.

Traditional braces address misalignments (technically known as malocclusions) by gradually shifting teeth into place over the course of treatment. Although some patients dislike the way braces affect their appearance while wearing them, once treatment is over, a patient’s appearance will usually improve substantially. In addition, patients may choose clear or light-color ligaments to minimize the “noticeability” of their braces.

Invisalign

Invisalign isn’t technically a type of braces. Instead, it’s an alternative to braces.

Invisalign treatment may be as effective as braces when a patient’s misalignments are mild or moderate. A dentist or orthodontist might recommend braces for a patient with a more significant malocclusion. Or, they might recommend a combination of treatment methods.

With this form of treatment, patients wear clear custom aligners that are virtually invisible in their mouths. Like braces, these aligners shift the position of teeth over time.

Along with their aesthetic benefits, Invisalign aligners are removable. Patients who opt for this type of treatment can more easily brush and floss. They also may not have to adjust their diets during treatment the way they might have to if they needed braces.

That said, wearing Invisalign aligners for the proper amount of time every day is key to achieving the intended results. Patients must also care for their aligners and keep them safe when not wearing them. Consider whether you’d truly be responsible enough to benefit from this treatment method if you’re deciding between Invisalign and braces.
