Breath Mints Help to Freshen Your Breath, But Do They Harm Your Teeth?

Breath Mints Help to Freshen Your Breath, But Do They Harm Your Teeth? No one wants bad breath, and a fast way to get rid of it (or at least mask it) is by popping a breath mint into your mouth.

But did you know that breath mints actually do more harm than good? Let's look at the harm that can come from using breath mints and talk about alternative ways to freshen your breath.

Number One Ingredient

The number one ingredient in most breath mints is, you guessed it! Sugar! While sugar does not directly harm your teeth and gums, it does feed the bacteria in your mouth allowing it to breed and grow. This bacteria forms plaque and is what causes tooth decay and the weakening of the enamel of your teeth. Additionally, since a breath mint's primary ingredient is sugar, and it feeds the bacteria, it does nothing to get rid of the bacteria in your mouth, and that's what is causing the bad breath in the first place.

Alternative Treatment For Bad Breath

If you're eating lunch out, or dining with friends and you don't have your toothbrush handy, you may be looking for an alternative way to freshen your breath. Since sugary breath mints are out of the question, try keeping some sugar free gum on hand for these situations. Chewing sugar free gum after meals not only freshens your breath, it increases saliva flow in your mouth, which washes out the bacteria causing bad breath.

Disposable tooth brushes are another alternative to breath mints. If you carry a bag or a purse, you can pack a small disposable tooth brush that doesn't even require water for use. Avoid mouth sprays, as these also usually contain mostly sugar.

Keep in mind that if you find that you're reaching for your toothbrush more often due to bad breath, it could be an indicator of a more serious problem that needs to be addressed.
